Chambana Science Cafe: June edition

Join us for the next Science Cafe!

Where: Espresso Royale in Urbana (1117 W Oregon St, across from Krannert)
When: Wednesday, June 5th, 5:30pm
Who: Sarah Erickson will talk about Optical imaging for improved diagnosis and surgical guidance of breast cancer. Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the U.S. and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, though the mortality rate due to breast cancer has been declining since 1990.  The American Cancer Society attributes this to early diagnosis and better treatment. However, current non-invasive methods for diagnosis have limitations. Optical imaging is being developed as a safe and inexpensive method for diagnosis. Sarah will discuss two areas of research in optical imaging of breast cancer: (1) the development of a hand-held imager, and (2) a portable optical coherence tomography system that assists surgeons during breast cancer operations.
Science cafés bring scientists to the public to talk about their work and answer your questions. Everyone is welcome! More info at: facebook.com/ChambanaScienceCafe
